MYOptimisation solves capacity problems for Briton
When business growth meant the that leading contract manufacturer, Briton EMS, needed more SMT capacity, the new MYOptimisation service from SMT expert MYDATA provided an effective and efficient solution that involved no capital expenditure.
The company’s MYDATA MY19e pick-and-place machine was providing excellent results, but Briton EMS Manufacturing Director, Simon Naylor was looking for ways in which its effective capacity could be increased. When he discussed his requirements with MYDATA, it was suggested that he would benefit from using the MYOptimisation service.
For users of this service, MYDATA carries out a detailed on-site audit of production facilities and methods, which can take between one and three days. The audit can cover just SMT operations, or it can be extended to other departments, such as engineering, stores and inspection. From data collected in the audit, MYDATA produces a comprehensive report that includes recommendations for improvements.
At Briton EMS, the MYOptimisation audit took two days and started in the engineering department moving on to look at the planning and scheduling operations. It also covered the way the MY19e machine was being set up and used, the component libraries, the performance records and the way in which components were being presented to the machine.
One of the most important recommendations in the subsequent report was that Briton EMS could make more effective use of the software that had been supplied with the MYDATA machine. In particular, taking full advantage of MYLabel, which makes it possible to track components with just two barcode scans, would simplify and speed machine loading, as it would eliminate the need for time-consuming and inconvenient on-machine checking.
“Implementing this recommendation alone yielded substantial benefits,” said Simon Naylor, “as it has allowed us to reduce changeover times to around one-third of what they were previously. That’s given a big boost to machine up time and, therefore, to productivity.”
Other recommendations included enhancements to production planning procedures, such as the introduction of a detailed daily production schedule, and changes to the layout of the SMT production area to give a logical progression from the stores the kitting area and then the SMT machine itself. MYDATA also suggested additional staff training to increase flexibility.
“The MYDATA team have been very supportive at every stage of the process,” said Simon Naylor, “and the outcome has been truly excellent, exceeding our expectations in every way. Companies are often reluctant to buy in expertise, but our experience with the MYOptimisation has shown that it can be extremely beneficial to do so. I would unreservedly recommend MYOptimisation to any company seeking to maximise the return on its SMT investment.”
